Therefore, Lord Shiva took upon himself the task of consuming the Halahala. It is the most poisonous snake, and therefore, only Lord Shiva, who knows how to tame the wildest/deadliest, could give relief to the world from the effects of the Halahala. Lord Shiva is someone who is seen wearing a snake (Vasuki) around his neck as a garland. Why only Lord Shiva had a solution to this problem caused due to the emergence of the Halahala? And this allegory interestingly mirrors today's situation, where innumerable species have gone extinct owing to the harm caused to Mother Nature by man. It causes massive damage to the underwater creatures and eventually destabilises the eco-system. In a lay man's words, Halahala refers to the harmful waste that gets dumped into the ocean by the human race. Shiv Puran is made available for free to download and read by everyone.
